Illegible Records - Ghetto Gas John

They say that some things are better late than never.

While decidedly neither late nor tardy in his own right, John Overholt's foray into music nevertheless began in his rather elderly late twenties. Initially studying and then teaching classical guitar in the Wahington D.C. area, he then moved more of his attention to his other musical passion: rock. John then, over the years, floated from one band to the next continuing to hone his now unique style of the 'effect sound - without the effects' before leaving the band scene altogether.

Eventually he found his way to Lansing, Michigan, where, after appearing impromptly with the now defunct Last Hippy Band, he met Mike Iott and began earnestly performing accompanying electric guitar again under the wing of Medicine Crow. He was then quickly accepted into the local Lansing music scene and recieved the memorable nickname of 'Ghetto Gas John' in honor of his day job managing a gas station in a somewhat questionable part of town.

It wasn't too long before John began writing more and more material of his own thus prompting him to construct a compact disc release on Illegible Records. Dealing with the complex issues of life with the perspective of a seasoned man looking starkly into his past, the album will also address modern politics as well as John's experiences in the Vietnam War. With Mike Iott producing, he hopes to mix his current rock/blues sound with the occasional blend of acoustic and classical guitar styles from his past for this, his debut solo CD. Featuring instrumentals as well as some vocal tunes, the album promises to span many spectrums of John Overholt's musical experience. "I guess it's fair to say that I'm working towards a legacy," he remarks, warmly.
