Illegible Records - Dennis Preston

One great talent in life is a blessing and a challenge to master at times. Two talents in life is just asking for trouble - just ask Dennis Preston.

Already established in the Mid-Michigan area as a striking and in-demand illustrator and graphic artist, Dennis is also, arguably, a closet multi-instrumentalist who has decidedly put his quieter times behind him. Gathering together ideas and song progressions over the last few years, he wasn't sure of the outlet of his music until one fateful day in 2006 when he bumped into the president of a local indie label that happened to be called Illegible Records. Coincidence or not, Dennis has never stopped being excited about the connection and the relationship that developed into him eventually being signed with the label "Illegible Records has got it alot more together than what The Beatles' Apple Records did when they first began" he says "I'm impressed."

Not that this is Dennis' first forays into music. He has played out in bands and recorded music in various short lived projects since the late 1960's that slowly culminated in a pair of self-produced collections in the early nineties before deciding to focus exclusively on the visual arts. Unnoticed, however, and behind the scenes, Dennis developed his skills of songwriting and musicianship waiting for the right time and place to share them. Building upon his experience with, initialy, the bass and then guitar, he also found himself drawn to the mandolin and the dulcimer as well, respectively. Now he works all of these towards a large scale and eclectic album to be released on Illegible Records that will be a combination of vocal and instrumental pieces fitting into what is now being described as an 'experimental folk' selection that the artist is itching to begin. Label head Eric Blades looks forward to it as well "I was always intriuged by Dennis' ideas and vision," he says "but when he first came out to Studio Lagoon and a few of us actually heard his music... we were more than thrilled."

Adding to these already existing flavors will be a few other musicians that will include, among others, a collection of Illegible artists such as Perry McDonald, Randall Carlson, Chara Love and Eric Blades who, along with this, will be pulling triple duty as the album's engineer and producer. Pleased by the roster, Dennis comments further on the source of the sound where he now fits in proudly - The Illegible Community "I like the label's vision for releasing a wide variety of projects by local artists! Very cool!"
